Formal Elements- Unit 1 NVQ

Formal Elements
The elements and principles of design are the building blocks used to create a work of art. They are used to organize or arrange the structural elements of design. Without these you cannot create a successful design project.

Balance
Balance involves the distribution of elements in a work of art. It can be symmetrical or asymmetrical.
balance can create movement, tension or calmness. Large flat areas without much detail can be balanced by smaller irregularly shaped objects since the eye is led towards the more intricate shape.
Arranging parts to achieve a state of equilibrium between forces of influences.
When a design has balance, all of the elements appear grounded. This can be achieved through symmetry or asymmetry.

Proportion
The proportion of elements provides weight or emphasis which draws the eye to a focal point of the design. Proportion works along with balance and rhythm to create a smooth flow
The relation or adaptation of one portion to another, Very often associated with figural art.

Rhythm
Visual rhythm can be created in a number of ways. Linear rhythm refers to the characteristic flow of the individual line
Rhythm in visual art is achieved through the creating a sense of movement. The repeated placement of elements, lines, or colour can move the viewers focus from one point to another
Applying this principle to art can achieve a sense of unity and progression that subconsciously feels right.

Emphasis
Often reffered to as the focal point. It marks the locations in a composition which most strongly draw the viewers attention.
Placement in a strategic position will call attention to a particular element of a design.
helps to create unity as the eye is attracted to a key point then led around the image by pictorial elements.
and balance work together to bring out unity.Establishing centers of interest which focus the viewer’s attention. If all the elements are given relatively equal weight, there will be no emphasis.
